SAVE THE DATE FOR ED BEARSS 2012 PROGRAM
Nationally Renowned Historian to Speak in Georgetown, Ohio. Ed Bearss (born June 26, 1923), a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II, is a military historian and author known for his work on the American Civil War and World War II eras and is the most popular tour guide of historic battlefields in the US. He served as Chief Historian of the National Park Service from 1981 to 1994. After his retirement in 1995, he received the title Chief Historian Emeritus which he holds to this day. Ed has correctly been called a national treasure by many people in the American historical community. Ed can tell the story of an event or of a historical character like no other. His style is his own, and if Ed Bearss can’t make you believe that history is a living thing, then no one can. Mr. Bearss is coming to Georgetown, Ohio to speak on Saturday, March 17, 2012. The U.S. Grant Homestead is proud to sponsor the event at the Gaslight Theater, 108 East State Street (the SE corner of US 125 & Main St.), at 1:30 PM. Mr. Bearss’ topic will be “Residing Tides: Gettysburg & Vicksburg”.  Civil War period music by Deann Kelley will begin at 1:00 PM for your enjoyment. Admission is $10.00. Mr. Bearss will compare and contrast these two great campaigns of the Civil War that occurred in the same time period but a thousand miles apart. The strategies, tactics, generalship, and importance of their outcomes on the course of the war will be discussed. This is a story that you should hear, and there is no one who can tell it better than Edwin C. Bearss.

Ohio Clothesline of Quilts Trail
Ohio Clothesline of Quilts Trail created by National GeographicGive Donna Sue Groves credit for this tribute to her mother, which began with a painted quilt square on the family farm's barn in Manchester. Now more than twenty barns in Adams County are decorated, each with a different pattern, creating a quilt sampler that honors this Appalachian tradition. Travel on state routes and side roads through five counties to find more of the Pinwheel, Lemoyne Stars, Windmill, Hour Glass and other unique pattern designs. The idea-birthed in Ohio-and now spreading across Appalachia and America-created an unexpected surge to preserve the barns on which the squares are painted, while linking the shared heritage of the region. The barns that are included in this coverlet are the first 10 that were painted. The second one is planned to be ready for the Quilt Barn – Covered Bridge Tour in October. If other barns are painted a third coverlet could be created.
